Apparently Windows 8 was not able to detect the PCI Express 2. I've tried a lot of stuff so far and none of that has worked.
So while I am kinda happy now, and the new card was not too expensive, I did go down on my Windows experience index on Windows 7. ATI RADEON HD 4800 Series - updated driver - Installed it, booted into Windows 7, drivers automatically downloaded and installed, all good.
Has anyone managed to get Windows 8 to accept the Win 7 drivers? I've tried a lot of stuff so far and none of that has worked. The system defaults to the default display driver and it fries my video card in a short while which forces me to shutdown periodically to cool it down. Not a great situation as you might imagine. Ok, here's an update. My ATI Radeon 4850 died today, a slow and painful death. Windows 7 kept BSODing on me multiple times as frequently as once every 20 minutes. So it seems using the basic video driver on Windows 8 with a higher resolution than the recommended 800x600 was just a really bad idea. I went and got a new video card, an inexpensive but fairly decent GeForce GT 520. Installed it, booted into Windows 7, drivers automatically downloaded and installed, all good. Rebooted into Windows 8, same old story - cannot find the card! Now, my desktop is a Dell Studio XPS 435T 2. I had never flashed the BIOS on it. As a last effort I went and did just that. Rebooted and now Windows 8 detected the card, installed the driver and all's been good so far about 30 mins now. Apparently Windows 8 was not able to detect the PCI Express 2. Had I done this with my old card before it got burned to a crisp, I may not have needed to buy a new one. So while I am kinda happy now, and the new card was not too expensive, I did go down on my Windows experience index on Windows 7. Went down from 7. Oh well, next year or so when Windows 8 RTMs, I'll likely need to build a new fast machine, so I'll worry about getting a 7. Until then I'll endure slow graphics and flickering displays! The latest ATI Drivers for windows 7 x64 do work. Catalyst Control Center from that down load also works and allows you to adjust your fan speed. That should help your temp problem. I couldn't force it either when I tried to manually select the inf file and update the driver got a message saying no appropriate driver found. What specific ATI Radeon model do you have? A related question : if I were to buy a new video card today, what would be one that would be more or less compatible with Windows 8 preview and maybe future betas? I am running an ATI 6950 Video Card with 2GB of memory. I didn't go for the specific Drivers to match my video card, I went for the latest drivers for Windows 7 X64 for all radeon based video cards Have you attempted running Windows Updates to see if there are any AMD graphics drivers available? Will try it again. The core issue seems to be that the OS does not even recognize it as an ATI radeon card. So I wonder if it will even try to download the updated drivers. I have ATI Radeon X1200 on my Toshiba laptop. I downloaded toshiba repackaged AMD driver, and it failed to install. No compatible hardware found error. But I just extracted all files using 7-zip to a folder, and used device manager manual driver update select drivers from my computer option. It did recongize the drivers and installed them properly. I don't have AMD's CCC which I don't need it either. May be worthwhile to try it. Regards, Adarsha As stated on the twitter, September's version of AMD drivers are scheduled near the month end. However, it has not been announced yet, whether the pack will also support Win8 or the current one on WU will still be the newest one available.
